Snaps from Turkey Creek

November 6, 2005 - May 5, 2006

An exhibition of photographs at Citylights Melbourne, by young artists from Warmun Aboriginal Community East Kimberley.

The young photographers who were part of this project are all from Warmun Aboriginal Community in the East Kimberley. Over six months they took photos of their friends, their families and their community with dis- posable cameras. Warmun (Turkey Creek) is 200kms south of Kununurra and 150kms from Halls Creek in Western Australia. Around 400 people live in Warmun. Ten young people between the ages of 15 and 25 were involved in this project.

“I live in Warmun Community in the middle of Halls Creek and Kununurra. Where I live it is hot, but we get cold wind at night, sometime rain. What I like about this place – my family, friends, sport like basketball every night, game shop, pool table, going out fishing, hunting, eating bush tucker. What I don’t like – walking around in this heat. I like to stop one place never move.” – JOHNINE ECHO

Artists Jonah Kingsley, Johnine Echo and Erica Nodea travelled all the way to Melbourne for the launch party.
