Movida Hosier Lane, CBD
Frank Camorra is a Melbourne institution, an award-winning chef admired by peers and patrons alike. As proprietor of Movida – a small restaurant specialising in tapas y vino – he has made an undeniable impact. “When we first started [cooking Spanish food] at the Karen Hotel, the general public loved it and we gained loyal clientele that are still with us,” says the Spain-born, Geelong-raised chef. But location is clearly part of the Movida success story. In 1998, Andy Mac installed Citylights – a series of art-filled light boxes – on Hosier Lane. “Around 2001 I started studios in the next building and we started painting one wall, and then another and no one really noticed,” says Mac. Hosier Lane is now a 24-hour gallery, which is rejuvenated in a collective, organic fashion, much like the dining scene. “We all sort of look after each other. You know, we all run our own business and have to focus on that, but it’s not at the expense of others,” says Camorra as visitors cluster behind him, first taking pictures of the walls, then of the chef and gallerist, hoping perhaps that they are capturing someone of note.
