Shadows in the Light

Tuesday, July 11, 2000 - Sunday, August 13, 2000

Sangeeta Sandrasegar was born in Brisbane of Malaysian and Australian parents and has lived for most of her life in Melbourne.

Her work is based around the intersection of differing, often clashing, cultures and she investigates the similarities and disparities in histories that are both literary and visual.

In exquisite wall-based cut-outs, which are often adorned with glitter and throw fantastical shadows, Sandrasegar revels in combining florid and erotic tales.

Her sources are as diverse as traditional Indian miniatures, Japanese anime and contemporary political narratives.

These interests have translated into a sustained research practice and the development of a visual language concerned with shadows.

Through installations of paper-cuts and soft sculptures, the constructed shadow motif used to discuss themes of self-hood, otherness and in-between spaces, as well as engaging with the fundamental role of the shadow in the history of Art.
